Grand Illusion Cinemaest. 1970

Opened in 1970 and renamed in 1979, Grand Illusion is billed as the longest continually running movie theater in Seattle and the only nonprofit cinema in the U.S. run entirely by volunteers. It lost its longtime U-District home in early 2025 and now runs pop-up screenings at partner venues while raising funds for a new permanent space.

Good to know

Reopening in the U District
Partner/pop-up screenings are winding down as Grand Illusion prepares to move into its new home: the historic Varsity Theatre building, 4329 University Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105. Per the landlord, the Varsity's iconic neon marquee stays essentially unchanged — but the venue will operate as Grand Illusion Cinema, not a reopened Varsity. No reopening date confirmed yet.
Accessibility
Venue dependent — varies by whichever partner venue is hosting a given screening.
Membership
$40/yr: reduced admission at pop-up screenings, plus member-exclusive event invites.
